The 11 American soccer newsletters you need to subscribe to

As American soccer expands and grows, more and more voices join the conversation. That means more opinions, more information, and more places to check to find out what’s going on.

It can be hard to stay on top of everything. Or, more importantly, everything that matters.

One of the best ways is to subscribe to a select handful of email newsletters. Here are 11 we like (in alphabetical order):

  • The Assist | A weekly survey of the soccer marketing landscape from powerhouse agency For Soccer.

  • The Athletic FC | Phil Hay’s brash-mouthed global POV (read: lots of Premier League), but since it’s from the NY Times’ sports division, there’s usually a US-related story or two.

  • CLUB ELEVEN | A weekly journey through the oddest corners of American soccer history, like “When the Muppets Designed the Official World Cup Mascot” and “Nirvana Once Played Pickup Soccer Against Male Strippers”

  • Full Time | The Athletic’s world-class women’s soccer team goes deep into the USWNT, NWSL, Gainbridge Super League, and more.

  • Getting CONCACAFed | Jon Arnold’s Substack tells you everything you didn’t think you needed to know about the game’s weirdest confederation.

  • Pathway | Affiliated with soccer marketing agency Name & Number, this semi-regular email shares all the open jobs around the soccer world.

  • The Rondo | USL writer Nicholas Murray’s twice weekly whirl around the wild and wonderful world of the United Soccer League.

  • The RONDO | Familiar name, but ALL CAPS! Goal.com’s weekly roundup of U.S. soccer stories is usually composed by staff writer Tom Hindle.

  • Soccer America Daily | Behind a paywall, but worth the money to get the essentials on the national teams, the domestic pro leagues, and the college game.

  • The Soccer Business | Veteran soccer writer Simon Evans weighs in on the latest happenings in the soccer industry.

  • Soccer Eagle | “Random American soccer ramblings” from longtime in-the-know soccer journalist Jason Davis.

  • Tactics Free Zone | MLS’s “Armchair Analyst” Matt Doyle takes fans down the tactical rabbit hole of the US’s top pro league.

There you have it. Our must-read soccer newsletters. Subscribe and enjoy.

Postscript: MLS used to have a great newsletter called The Kickoff (later renamed The Daily Kickoff) for nearly a decade and a half. It was originally written by the indefatigable Simon Borg, who passed it on to the irrepressible Sam Jones. Sadly, it was shut down. Have to assume there were reasons for that, but regardless, something unique was lost.
